Ithrottabandalag Reykjavikur (IBR) or Reykjavik Sports Union is an organization of around 60 sport clubs in the city of Reykjavik. IBR was founded on August 31st 1944. The total number of members in these clubs is about 50.000 of which about 30.000 are active in sports. In addition to funds that the union gets from the national Olympic and Sports Association (ISI) through Lotto and Icelandic Pools (1X2), it receives funds from the City of Reykjavik. The funds from ISI are spread out to the clubs to support activity and funds from the city are mostly used to support the clubs in running their own facilities or to give them training hours in those owned by the city. The support is being spread out to the clubs by a system that allows a certain amount of minutes per team or group of individuals, depending on age and numbers. Clubs can also get support for travelling domestically and abroad plus payments for their members in case of accidents. Reykjavik Sports Union works closely with the Reykjavik council of sports and leisure on finding ways to help the clubs in their daily work, in making guidelines for sports in the city and setting goals for development of activities and facilities for sport. Reykjavik Sports Union is active in promoting sports in Reykjavik and has been responsible for the Reykjavik Marathon since 2003.
